The Richmond Senior Center

Reflects the diversity of its neighborhood. San Francisco’s past and present are clearly evident here, whether listening to Chinese and English spoken in the lunchroom or looking across Geary Boulevard at the golden domes of Holy Virgin Cathedral’s Russian Orthodox Church. Still home to a large Russian population, the Richmond District now accommodates a largely Chinese census.

Not limited to ethnic diversity, our center provides integrative programming to older adults, and developmentally disabled adults. This is one of the only programs of its kind in San Francisco.

Our day begins with people setting up work spaces for their art, while others peruse the daily newspapers to discuss the latest events. As paratransit vans arrive, individuals using walkers and wheelchairs join the other neighborhood regulars enjoying a cup of tea or coffee. Integration has become an accepted way of life for program participants. The hospitality and understanding found here is a reaffirming aspect of what is truly a supportive and inclusive community.
